Surya Palm Fiber Placemat | Brown | Set of 2 | KORISSA
Surya Palm Fiber Placemat — Brown | Set of 2 | KORISSA
A set of two round placemats handwoven from natural palm fiber in a dense spiral weave — worked from the center outward in warm brown tones, with a distinctive serrated edge of pointed loops running around the entire circumference. The serrated border is not decorative trim added after weaving; it is formed by the weaving process itself, each point a continuation of the spiral structure. Designed and curated by KORISSA, handmade by Fair Trade artisans in Bangladesh.
The Serrated Edge — Where Craft Becomes Signature
Most woven placemats end cleanly — a bound edge, a folded hem, a fringe. The Surya ends differently: in a ring of sharp, evenly spaced points that give the placemat the silhouette of a sun, a gear, or a crown, depending on the light and the angle. This edge is the result of a specific weaving decision — each point formed individually as the spiral reaches its outer limit. It is the kind of detail that takes longer to make and that reads immediately as intentional, skilled, and distinctive.
At the table, the serrated edge does something that a plain round placemat cannot: it creates a visual frame around the plate that is active rather than passive. The points draw the eye inward toward the food and the tableware, and they give the table a rhythm — a repeated pattern that reads as designed rather than merely functional.
How It Improves Your Daily Life
A round placemat works on any table shape — round, square, rectangular, or irregular. The Surya's warm brown tone is neutral enough to work with any tableware color, and the spiral weave creates a naturally cushioned, non-slip surface that holds plates and bowls securely without a rubber backing. The palm fiber is naturally heat-resistant — it handles hot plates and bowls without damage.
A set of two covers two place settings, or one setting with room for a side dish and a glass. They stack flat when not in use and take up minimal space. The dense weave is easy to wipe clean after use.
Why Palm Fiber?
Palm fiber is harvested from the leaves of palm trees — a fast-growing, naturally renewable plant that requires no pesticides or irrigation beyond rainfall. The fiber is strong, naturally heat-resistant, and biodegradable at end of life. The warm brown color is the natural color of the dried palm fiber — no dyes, no chemical treatments. What you see is the material itself.
Fair Trade Artisan-Made
Designed and curated by KORISSA, handwoven by Fair Trade artisans in Bangladesh. Fair wages, safe working conditions, community investment. The spiral weave and serrated edge are worked entirely by hand — slight variations in the spacing of the points, the density of the spiral, and the overall diameter are inherent to the handweaving process. No two placemats are identical.
