California White Sage Smudge Sticks — Organic | Hand-Tied | Faiza Naturals

Important note: These are smudge sticks for burning — not for making tea. California white sage (Salvia apiana) is a different plant from common culinary sage (Salvia officinalis) and is traditionally used for smoke cleansing, ceremony, and meditation. It is not intended for internal use as a beverage.

Hand-harvested and hand-tied bundles of California white sage (Salvia apiana) — gathered from the sun-drenched coastal scrubland of Southern California, where the plant grows wild on rocky slopes and canyon walls facing the Pacific. Each bundle is tied by hand with natural cotton string in a tight spiral from base to tip, then sun-dried to preserve the full aromatic profile of the fresh leaf. No pesticides, no growth hormones, no artificial drying. The result is a smudge stick that burns cleanly, releases a full, resinous smoke, and carries the scent of the California coast. Made by Faiza Naturals, Southern California.

Each bundle: approximately 8” (20 cm) long | 45.36 g (1.6 oz) | Packed in a small sealed bag

White Sage vs. Culinary Sage — Not the Same Plant

California white sage (Salvia apiana) and common culinary sage (Salvia officinalis) are both members of the sage family, but they are distinct species with different properties and different traditional uses. Culinary sage is used in cooking and herbal teas. California white sage is used for burning — its leaves are thick, resinous, and highly aromatic when combusted, producing a dense, fragrant smoke that is the basis of its ceremonial use. The two plants look different, smell different, and are used differently. If you are looking for sage for cooking or tea, this is not that product.

White Sage — A Plant of the California Coast

Salvia apiana grows on dry, rocky slopes below 1,500 meters, in full sun, in the thin, well-drained soils of the coastal ranges of Southern California and Baja California. The leaves are silver-white, covered in fine hairs that reflect sunlight and reduce water loss. When burned, they release a complex aromatic compound — camphor, eucalyptol, and alpha-thujone among others — the characteristic scent of white sage that is unlike any other plant.

The plant has been used by the indigenous peoples of Southern California — the Chumash, the Tongva, the Cahuilla, and others — for thousands of years, in ceremonies of purification, healing, and prayer. Today it is practiced by people of many backgrounds as a way of marking transitions, clearing energy, and creating a moment of intentional stillness.

How It Improves Your Daily Life

Light the tip of the bundle, allow it to catch and then blow out the flame, and move the smoldering stick through the space you want to clear — along walls, into corners, around doorways. The smoke settles briefly and then disperses, leaving a clean, resinous scent that fades within an hour.

Use a smudge stick when you move into a new home, after a difficult conversation, before meditation or yoga, at the beginning or end of a work week, or simply when a room feels stale or heavy. The ritual of lighting and moving the stick creates a brief pause in the day that functions as a reset. The effect is partly aromatic and partly the effect of the pause itself.

The 2, 3, 4, and 5-bundle options are the most practical for regular use — a single bundle burns for multiple sessions if extinguished carefully after each use. The multi-bundle options also make a complete, considered gift — paired with a ceramic bowl or an abalone shell for catching ash.

Sun-Dried, Hand-Tied — Faiza Naturals

Faiza Naturals is located in Southern California. The sage is harvested by hand from plants that are not sprayed with pesticides or treated with growth hormones. After harvesting, the bundles are tied by hand with natural cotton string and dried in the sun — a process that preserves the full volatile oil content of the leaf, which gives the smoke its characteristic depth and complexity. Each bundle is packed in a small sealed bag to preserve freshness until use.

How to Use

  • Hold the bundle at the base and light the tip — allow it to catch for 10–20 seconds, then blow out the flame
  • The tip should smolder and produce a steady stream of smoke — if it goes out, relight
  • Move the smoldering bundle through the space, directing smoke into corners and along walls
  • Hold a ceramic bowl, abalone shell, or fireproof dish beneath the bundle to catch falling ash
  • To extinguish: press the tip firmly into sand or soil until the ember goes out — do not use water
  • Store unused bundles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
