The Cactus Blossom — A Pattern Born from the Weave

The cactus blossom is one of the signature patterns of Rwandan basket weaving — a radiating star form with pointed, serrated arms that has been woven into sisal and sweetgrass baskets in the Great Lakes region of East Africa for generations. The pattern takes its name from the flower of the cactus: a bloom that opens suddenly and completely, with petals that are simultaneously soft and sharp, organic and geometric. In the Boutique bowl, the cactus blossom is rendered in maximum contrast — pure black on pure white — which gives the traditional pattern a graphic boldness that works as well in a contemporary interior as it does in its original cultural context.

The jagged, pixelated edges of the pattern arms are not a design imperfection — they are the direct result of the coil weaving technique. The spiral coil advances in discrete steps, and the color changes that create the pattern can only occur at the point where one coil meets the next. This means that diagonal and curved lines in the pattern are necessarily stepped — each step the width of one coil ring. The larger the bowl, the finer the steps relative to the overall pattern, and the smoother the apparent curve. In the large bowl (16”), the cactus blossom arms are rendered with a precision and detail that the small bowl (7”) cannot achieve — the same pattern, but a different resolution.

Why Sisal & Coil Weaving?

Sisal is harvested from the leaves of the Agave sisalana plant — a fast-growing succulent cultivated across East Africa. The fiber is strong, naturally resistant to moisture and UV degradation, and biodegradable at end of life. The coil weaving technique — where a core of locally harvested forest grasses is wrapped with sisal fiber and coiled continuously from the center outward — is one of the oldest basket-making traditions in East Africa, practiced in Rwanda for generations. It produces a structure that is rigid, durable, and capable of holding complex geometric patterns across its surface.

The black and white colors are achieved through natural dyeing of the sisal fiber before weaving. The white ground is the natural, undyed color of the sisal fiber itself.
