The Calado technique is not a standard weave — it is a combination of weaving and lacework that requires the weaver to work in two distinct modes on the same piece of cloth. In the plain-woven bands, the shuttle passes normally across the full width of the warp. In the Calado bands, the weaver draws groups of weft threads together by hand and ties them at intervals to create the open lattice pattern — a process that cannot be mechanized and that requires sustained attention and manual precision to keep the pattern consistent across the full length of the runner.

A Calado runner takes approximately twice as long to weave as a plain-woven runner of the same dimensions. The additional time is visible in the finished piece: the lattice pattern is even and consistent from end to end, the open cells uniform in size and spacing, the transition between the plain-woven and open-woven bands clean and precise.
