A handwoven decorative bowl worked in a continuous spiral coil technique — natural sisal fiber wound over a core of locally harvested forest grasses, coiled from a tight central point outward to a smooth rounded rim. The surface of each bowl carries a color accent pattern woven into the spiral as it progresses: white rectangular dashes at regular intervals in the Tea & White colorway; teal and white diamond shapes in the Tea & Light Orange, White & Teal colorway; black accent blocks in the Tea & Black colorway. The ground in all colorways is warm natural tea — the undyed color of the sisal fiber itself. Curated by KORISSA, handwoven by Azizi Life artisans in Rwanda.

One Bowl, One to Three Days of Work

A small Bariku bowl takes an Azizi Life artisan one to two days to complete. A medium bowl takes two to three days. This is not a figure cited for effect — it is the actual time required to coil, wrap, and pattern a bowl of this size by hand, working at the pace that the technique demands. The spiral coil cannot be rushed: each ring of the coil must be wrapped evenly, the tension maintained consistently from center to rim, and the color accent pieces placed at precisely the right point in each revolution to keep the pattern aligned across the expanding surface.

The result of this time is visible in the finished bowl. The coil is dense and even — the rings sit flush against each other with no gaps, the surface smooth to the touch. The accent pattern is crisp — the color changes sharp, the intervals consistent. The rim is rounded and finished, not raw. These are the qualities that distinguish a bowl made slowly and carefully from one made quickly.

How It Improves Your Daily Life

The Bariku bowl is flat enough to use as a tray and deep enough to hold small objects without them sliding out. Use the small bowl (7”) on a desk for rings, hair ties, a candle, or a single key. Use it on a bathroom shelf for cotton rounds and small bottles. Use the medium bowl (12”) on a coffee table for fruit, on a dining table as a centerpiece, or on an entryway console for keys and small objects that accumulate near the door.

Every Bariku bowl has a hanging loop on the back — a small loop of fiber attached to the coil at the rear of the bowl that allows it to be hung on a wall nail without a frame or bracket. Use the small bowl as a single wall accent. Use the medium bowl as a statement piece. Use both sizes together on a wall — the consistent spiral pattern and color palette across the two sizes creates a visual pair that reads as a curated set.

Why Sisal & Forest Grass?

Sisal is harvested from the leaves of the Agave sisalana plant — a fast-growing succulent native to Mexico, now cultivated across East Africa. The fiber is strong, naturally resistant to moisture and UV degradation, and biodegradable at end of life. The core of the Bariku bowl is wound from grasses harvested locally in Rwanda — gathered from the surrounding landscape by the artisans themselves, using materials that have been used in Rwandan basket weaving for generations. The combination of sisal wrapping and grass core produces a bowl that is rigid, durable, and lightweight — strong enough to hold fruit or objects, light enough to hang on a wall without a heavy fixing.

The natural tea color of the sisal ground is the undyed color of the fiber — no dye is applied to the base material. The accent colors are achieved through natural dyeing of the sisal fiber before weaving.

Each bowl comes with information about the artisan journey from sisal harvest to finished work of art.
