The Spiral — The Oldest Mark a Human Hand Can Make

The spiral is the first geometric form that appears in human art — carved into stone at Newgrange in Ireland five thousand years ago, painted on the walls of Neolithic caves, woven into the baskets and textiles of every culture that has worked with fiber. It is a form that the hand produces naturally when it coils — the same motion that creates a basket from the center outward, that winds a thread onto a spool, that forms a shell or a galaxy or a fingerprint. The spiral is not a design choice imposed on the Alexia bowl from outside; it is the direct expression of the coiling technique used to make it. The pattern and the structure are the same thing.

What makes the Alexia exceptional is what happens as the spiral expands outward from the center. The tight central coil — warm brown raffia wound into a dense point — gives way to alternating rings of natural brown and white, punctuated at regular intervals by rectangular blocks of black that create a radiating rhythm across the surface. These blocks are not printed or applied; they are woven into the coil as it progresses, each one requiring the weaver to change fiber color at a precise point in the spiral and maintain that change for exactly the right number of coils before returning to the ground color. The precision required to keep the blocks aligned across a continuously expanding spiral — where each ring is slightly larger than the last — is a measure of the skill of the weaver.

The black outer rim frames the entire composition like a border on a painting — containing the radiating pattern, giving it a defined edge, and making the bowl read as a complete, resolved object rather than a fragment of a larger pattern.

Raffia is harvested from the leaves of the raffia palm — a fast-growing tree native to tropical Africa and Madagascar, where it has been used for weaving, tying, and binding for thousands of years. The fiber is naturally strong, slightly lustrous, and biodegradable at end of life. The coil weaving technique used in the Alexia bowl — where a core of fiber is wrapped with a binding thread and coiled continuously from the center outward — is one of the oldest basket-making techniques in the world, found in archaeological sites across Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas. It produces a structure that is rigid, durable, and capable of holding complex geometric patterns across its surface.

The three colors used in the Alexia — black, natural brown, and white — are achieved through natural and locally-available raw materials. No synthetic dyes are applied to the finished surface. The color is in the fiber itself.

The spiral coil and geometric pattern are worked entirely by hand — the alignment of the rectangular blocks across the expanding spiral requires sustained precision and skill that cannot be mechanized. As each product is made from natural materials, slight variations in block size, spiral density, color shade, and overall diameter are inherent to the process. No two bowls are identical.
