The Herringbone — A Weave Pattern That Has Outlasted Every Trend

The herringbone — a diagonal V-shaped pattern created by reversing the direction of the weave at regular intervals — takes its name from the skeleton of a herring fish, whose bones radiate outward from the spine in exactly this alternating pattern. It is one of the oldest weave structures in textile history, found in ancient Egyptian linen, Roman wool, and medieval European cloth. It has appeared in tweed jackets, parquet floors, brick pavements, and woven baskets across every culture that has worked with fiber or material.

What makes the herringbone endure is not fashion but geometry: the alternating diagonal creates a surface that is visually active without being busy, structured without being rigid, and directional without being aggressive. The fiber is strong, naturally biodegradable, and develops a warm patina with age and use — the surface of a jute basket that has been used for years has a depth and character that a new basket does not.
