Handwoven Table Runner in Indigo Arrow — MESO Goods | Maya Artisans, Guatemala

A handwoven table runner in natural indigo with a woven arrow motif — the arrow pattern running the full length of the runner on a dense, textured indigo background, the natural and indigo threads interlocking in a repeating chevron-arrow design that catches the light differently from every angle. The edges are finished with a hand-knotted fringe — individual threads knotted by hand at both short ends, the fringe adding movement and a handcraft quality to the finished piece.

The runner is woven on a backstrap loom — a traditional weaving technique in which the loom is anchored to a fixed point and tensioned against the weaver's body, allowing the weaver to control the tension of every thread by feel. The backstrap loom produces a weave density and a textile quality that a floor loom or a machine cannot replicate. The indigo color is achieved through natural plant-based dyeing — the deep blue shifts slightly across the surface of the weave, the natural variation of the dye process visible in the texture of the fabric.

Maya Women Artisans — Guatemala

The Indigo Arrow Table Runner is woven by Maya women artisans in Guatemala, working through MESO Goods — a social enterprise designed by Diego Olivero and operated through Powered by People. MESO Goods works with over 550 artisan families in Guatemala, Peru, Haiti, and Honduras, providing fair wages, safe working conditions, and long-term partnerships that support entire communities.

The backstrap loom weaving technique used to make this runner is a pre-Columbian tradition that has been practiced by Maya women in Guatemala for over 2,000 years. Each runner is woven entirely by hand — the arrow motif, the indigo dye, and the knotted fringe are all produced by the same artisan from start to finish. MESO Goods has been named a finalist in the Fast Company World Changing Ideas Awards, and MESO products are carried by Design Within Reach (DWR) and Nordstrom, and featured in Domino and Vogue.

How It Improves Your Daily Life

The arrow motif gives this runner a visual energy that a plain stripe runner does not have — the repeating chevron-arrow pattern creates a directional movement along the length of the table, drawing the eye from one end to the other. The deep indigo blue works with natural wood, white ceramics, terracotta, and warm neutral tableware — it is one of the most versatile colors in a dining room.

Use it as a dining table runner for everyday meals and for entertaining. Use it as a console table runner on a sideboard or an entryway table. Use it as a decorative textile — draped over a bench, a shelf, or a chair. The 14" × 60" size also works as a scarf or shawl — the width and the weight of the handwoven cotton make it a wearable textile as well as a home accessory.

How to Style It

  • Dining table — centered on a natural wood table with white ceramic plates and simple glassware
  • Console table or sideboard — with a vase, candles, and decorative objects on top
  • Entryway bench — draped over a bench with a small basket and a plant
  • Worn as a scarf or shawl — the 14" × 60" size works as a wearable textile
  • Gift — a complete, considered housewarming or hosting gift; carried by DWR and Nordstrom
  • Pairs with: natural wood, white and cream ceramics, linen, terracotta, and warm neutral interiors
