Buffalo Chex Alpaca Blanket — 80% Alpaca | Otavalo, Ecuador | ThunderMileRanch

A bed blanket in the classic buffalo check pattern — bold red and black squares in equal proportion, woven from a blend of 80% alpaca and 20% acrylic into a fabric that is simultaneously warm, lightweight, and soft against the skin. The check is large and graphic — each square approximately 5 cm across — giving the blanket a strong visual presence whether folded at the foot of a bed, draped across a sofa, or spread across a Queen-size mattress. Designed by ThunderMileRanch, handmade in a family workshop in Otavalo, Ecuador.

Size: 182×244 cm — fits beds up to Queen size (152×204 cm)

Alpaca — The Fiber That Outperforms Wool

Alpaca fiber is finer, lighter, and warmer than sheep’s wool — and unlike wool, it contains no lanolin, which means it is naturally hypoallergenic and does not cause the itching or irritation that wool can produce against sensitive skin. The fiber has a natural hollow core that traps air and provides insulation without weight — an alpaca blanket at a given thickness is warmer than a wool blanket of the same weight. It is also naturally moisture-wicking, drawing perspiration away from the body rather than holding it against the skin.

The 20% acrylic in the Buffalo Chex blend adds dimensional stability and durability to the fabric — the blanket holds its shape and color through repeated use and washing without the felting or shrinkage that a 100% alpaca fabric can be prone to. The result is a blanket that has the softness and warmth of alpaca with the practical resilience of a blended fabric.

Otavalo — A Town That Has Woven for Centuries

Otavalo is a market town in the Andes of northern Ecuador, at an altitude of 2,530 meters, and it has been a center of textile production for longer than written records exist in the region. The Otavaleño people were weaving fine cloth before the Inca conquest of the region in the 15th century, and they continued weaving through the Spanish colonial period, when Otavalo became one of the most productive textile centers in South America. Today the town is known throughout the Americas and Europe for the quality of its woven textiles.

The Buffalo Chex blanket is made in a family workshop just outside the town — a small operation where the weaving is done on traditional looms by weavers who have learned the craft from their parents and grandparents. The workshop is part of a supply chain that ThunderMileRanch has built in partnership with Choice Alpaca of Ramona, California — connecting Suri alpaca fiber from the ranches of western Montana with the weaving expertise of Otavalo.

How It Improves Your Daily Life

A good blanket is one of the most used objects in a home — it is on the sofa when you read, on the bed when the night turns cold, over your shoulders when you work at a desk in the early morning. The Buffalo Chex is large enough to cover a Queen-size bed as a decorative layer or to wrap two people on a sofa. The bold red and black squares read as a strong graphic element in any room — draped over a neutral sofa it adds color and pattern, folded at the foot of a bed it adds warmth and texture.

How to Use & Style It

  • Bed layer — folded at the foot of a bed over a neutral duvet for color and texture
  • Sofa throw — draped over the arm or back of a sofa for warmth and visual interest
  • Reading chair — kept on a chair for cool evenings and early mornings
  • Veranda or outdoor use — the alpaca blend is warm enough for cool outdoor evenings
  • Gift — pairs naturally with a candle, a book, and a ceramic mug for a complete gift set
  • Pairs with: natural wood, white walls, terracotta, cream linen, and black metal accents
