Terracotta Bread Warmer & Seagrass Basket — Owl Round | KORISSA

A round terracotta bread warmer stone engraved with a hand-carved owl perched on a tree branch surrounded by stars, set into a handwoven seagrass and jute basket with white cotton rope handles. Bread Warmer: 0.5” tall × 9” round (1.3 × 23cm). Basket: 3.25” tall × 11” round (8.3 × 28cm). Keeps bread warm for up to 40 minutes. Arrives gift-ready in a kraft box with full instructions. Designed and curated by KORISSA, handmade by Fair Trade artisans in Bangladesh.

Unlike the Bird Round design — which features a single bird in flight — the Owl Round depicts an owl at rest on a branch under a starlit sky, surrounded by leaves and stars. The owl motif is more detailed and more symbolic: a piece that invites a second look every time it appears at the table.

The Owl — Symbol of Wisdom, Protection & Good Fortune

The owl is one of the oldest and most universal symbols in human culture — present in the mythology and folk tradition of nearly every civilization from ancient Greece to Native American culture, from the Far East to the Balkans and Anatolia, where this piece was inspired.

In the home, the owl is traditionally associated with wisdom and knowledge — a guardian of the household that brings clarity and good judgment to those who live there. In many cultures it is also a symbol of protection: the owl sees in the dark, which makes it a natural emblem of watchfulness and safety. In Eastern European and Anatolian folk tradition, an owl figure in the home is believed to bring good fortune and abundance — particularly in the kitchen and at the table, where food and hospitality are shared.

At the table, the Owl Round bread warmer does something the Bird Round does not: it starts a conversation. The owl on a starlit branch is a motif with enough cultural resonance that guests will ask about it — which makes it as much a storytelling object as a functional one.

How It Improves Your Daily Life

Bread goes cold quickly at the table — especially in winter, or when a meal runs long. The terracotta stone solves this without electricity, without batteries, and without anything that needs to be plugged in: heat the stone in the oven at 350°F for 5–10 minutes (or microwave on high for 2–4 minutes), place it in the basket, lay a cloth napkin over it, and set the bread on top. The stone retains heat for up to 40 minutes — long enough for any meal. The basket sits naturally at the center of the table, and the engraved owl and starlit tree makes it a decorative object as much as a functional one.

Why Terracotta & Seagrass?

Terracotta is one of the oldest heat-retention materials in the world — dense, porous, and naturally insulating. It heats evenly, holds temperature without hot spots, and releases heat gradually rather than all at once. No synthetic coatings, no chemical treatments — just fired clay. The seagrass and jute basket is harvested from sustainably grown coastal plants, handwoven without synthetic reinforcement, and fully biodegradable at end of life.

Fair Trade Artisan-Made

Designed and curated by KORISSA, handwoven and hand-engraved by Fair Trade artisans in Bangladesh. Fair wages, safe working conditions, community investment. The owl motif is hand-carved into each terracotta stone — slight variations in depth, texture, and proportion are inherent to the process. No two pieces are identical.

How to Use It

  1. Preparation — before first use, rinse the terracotta stone with water and dry thoroughly
  2. Heat the stone — oven: 350°F for 5–10 minutes | microwave: high for 2–4 minutes
  3. Place in basket — use oven mitts or tongs to handle the hot stone; place in the seagrass basket
  4. Set up bread — lay a cloth napkin or tea towel over the stone to protect from oil stains; place bread on top
  5. Keep warm — cover bread with another cloth napkin; retains heat for up to 40 minutes
  6. Clean — rinse stone with water after use and dry well. Hand wash only — not dishwasher safe. Never put the basket in the oven.

How to Gift It

Arrives in a kraft gift box with the seagrass basket, terracotta stone, and printed instructions — ready to give without additional wrapping. A meaningful, original gift for anyone who loves bread, cooking, or hosting — and for anyone who appreciates the symbolism of the owl in the home. Pairs naturally with a quality olive oil, a linen tea towel, or a set of artisan preserves.
